Admission Requirements in Thailand's Higher Education Institutions
Thailand has a centralized admission system where students can finish secondary school or its equivalent and appear in a numerous exams. For entrance into all universities, students must give the P-Net or (Ordinary) National Education Test. Admission criteria for most universities is this exam score.
Admission Criteria For Thai Higher Education System
O-NET: This tests fundamental knowledge across the following different subjects: Thai language and literature, English language, Maths, Comprehensive Science, Social Science, Health Studies and Arts and Culture. Students have to take this test to obtain admission into most Thai universities via direct admission system. Students still use the admission system which is centralised.
Aptitude Tests: This is a General Aptitude Test or GAT which students must take to assess their reasoning ability and English proficiency of candidate. Students are asked to directly link between events.
O-NET and GAT are scored through the computer. Second aptitude test is the Professional Aptitude Exam/PAT. Subjects offered for this exam are advanced maths, sciences, engineering and architectural aptitude, professional aptitude specific to the education, fine as well as applied arts and languages.
Admission Procedure and Instructional Guidelines in Thailand
Students can report all scores to the centralised admission process. Different mathematical formulae are employed for weighing scores for certain programs. Students choose the course or faculty they want to study in. Pharmacology needs high score in science section, whereas a high math score is required for economics. Similarly, languages are a must for humanities students and social sciences for social studies. Students in fine and apple art must submit a portfolio as well.
The exceptions to the centralised admission and direct admission system are Medicine and Dentistry. These two disciplines follow their own system of admission. Students must appear for the following subjects for entry into higher studies in Thailand:
- Math
- Language and literatures (Thai)
- English
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology
- Social Sciences
Admission Requirements for Higher Education System in Thailand
Aptitude tests for medicine and dentistry: These include hart reasoning exams, ethics test as well as reading analysis and synthesis. Admission is made as per student’s scores which are weighted. Student’s scores are the basis for admission along with completion of higher secondary education.This includes vocational or general tests.
CUAS or Centralised University Admission system has made the admission process extremely simple and increased the weighting of the performance of students in higher secondary studies as indicated by GPA. 2 new entrance tests have been introduced in 2006 namely O-NET and its more in depth counterpart A-NET or National Education Test (Advanced).
Initial weighting for this text includes test scores (70%) and GPA(30%) earlier. In 2010, the system changed further wherein O-NET (30%) GAT and PAT(50%) and GPA (20%) are taken into consideration for admission.
While the O-NET can only be taken once, GAT and PAT can be taken many times in succession. Exams are offered thrice in a year.
Higher education admission system is centralized and direct in most cases. Certain universities follow their own system of admission. Admissions generally commence prior to the start of the first semester in June. Reforms are in place for the semester to start in August or September soon.
